 Elijah's Coin

Elijah’s Coin
By Steve O’Brien
Publisher: A & N Publishing (May 1, 2009)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0982073534
ISBN-13: 978-0982073537
Product Dimensions: 7.3 x 5.

Elijah’s Coin tells the story of a young man, Tom Wagner, who has suffered a tragic loss and is spiraling out of control. Angry, anti-social, and rapidly descending into a life of crime, he seems lost until a mysterious night watchman, Elijah King, is encountered. With a strange coin Elijah has given him, Tom sets off on a journey of self-discovery. Through coming to know others whose lives were also transformed by Elijah, he begins to find himself. Still, he feels desperate to locate Elijah again—a quest that ultimately leads to a shocking discovery.

Part Two of the story shows how Tom lives the message he has learned, learns to trust his own instincts, and becomes a mentor to other individuals on the verge of being “lost.” A serious conflict between his new values and a thirst for vengeance arises, however, when Tom finds himself face-to-face with the darkest figure from his own past.…
Engaging, thoughtful, and ultimately profound, Elijah’s Coin is a rare example of a work of fiction that can transform its readers.

Three ordinary women are about to take one extraordinary step.

Twenty-two-year-old Skeeter has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but it is 1962, Mississippi, and her mother will not be happy till Skeeter has a ring on her finger. Skeeter would normally find solace with her beloved maid Constantine, the woman who raised her, but Constantine has disappeared and no one will tell Skeeter where she has gone.

Aibileen is a black maid, a wise, regal woman raising her seventeenth white child. Something has shifted inside her after the loss of her own son, who died while his bosses looked the other way. She is devoted to the little girl she looks after, though she knows both their hearts may be broken.

Minny, Aibileen's best friend, is short, fat, and perhaps the sassiest woman in Mississippi. She can cook like nobody's business, but she can't mind her tongue, so she's lost yet another job. Minny finally finds a position working for someone too new to town to know her reputation. But her new boss has secrets of her own.

Seemingly as different from one another as can be, these women will nonetheless come together for a clandestine project that will put them all at risk. And why? Because they are suffocating within the lines that define their town and their times. And sometimes lines are made to be crossed.

In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women--mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends--view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

Kathryn Stockett was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi. After graduating from the University of Alabama with a degree in English and Creative Writing, she moved to New York City where she worked in magazine publishing and marketing for nine years. She currently lives in Atlanta with her husband and daughter. The Help is her first novel.

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater grew from the now fabled performance in March 1958, at the 92nd Street Young Men's Hebrew Association in New York. Led by Alvin Ailey and a group of young African-American modern dancers, that performance changed forever the perception of American dance.

Today, led by Artistic Director, Judith Jamison, AAADT has gone on to perform for an estimated 23 million people in 48 states and in 71 countries on six continents, including two historic residencies in South Africa. The company has earned a reputation as one of the most acclaimed international ambassadors of American culture, promoting the uniqueness of the African-American cultural experience and the preservation and enrichment of the American modern dance.

 WHITNEY Museum of American Art

As the preeminent institution devoted to the art of the United States, the Whitney Museum of American Art presents the full range of twentieth-century and contemporary American art, with a special focus on works by living artists. The Whitney is dedicated to collecting, preserving, interpreting, and exhibiting American art, and its collection—arguably the finest holding of twentieth-century American art in the world—is the Museum’s key resource. The Museum’s signature exhibition, the Biennial, is the country’s leading survey of the most recent developments in American art.

Innovation has been a hallmark of the Whitney since its beginnings. It was the first museum dedicated to the work of living American artists and the first New York museum to present a major exhibition of a video artist (Nam June Paik in 1982). Such figures as Jasper Johns, Cy Twombly, and Cindy Sherman were given their first museum retrospectives by the Whitney. The Museum has consistently purchased works within the year they were created, often well before the artists became broadly recognized. The Whitney was the first museum to take its exhibitions and programming beyond its walls by establishing corporate-funded branch facilities, and the first museum to undertake a program of collection-sharing (with the San Jose Museum of Art) in order to increase access to its renowned collection.

Featured Actor Profile.....Morena Baccarin

Anna

Never has an alien looked so out of this world. When the Visitors landed on Earth on ABC's hit sci-fi drama, V last Tuesday, none was more captivating than Morena Baccarin.

The stunning, 30-year-old Brazilian-born actress – who previously starred on Firefly – made quite a first impression with humans and viewers alike in her role as Anna, the sly and smooth alien leader. (V airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on ABC through November.)

Here are five things you may not know about TV's hottest new star.

1. She is a gourmet cook: "I love to get random recipes and try them. I cook very few things twice," she says. "Saveur magazine is my favorite magazine, and they have simple and unusual recipes I like to try."

2. She had a crush on her V costar Scott Wolf: She wasn't obsessed, but Baccarin admits that 15 years ago she was a huge Party of Five fan. "I loved it," she says. And Wolf's appeal on the show was simple: "He was the nice guy. I do remember watching it and [thinking] he was very hot." These days, however, Baccarin's affections are reserved for her boyfriend of two years, director Austin Chick.

3. Her pooch helped her through a rough patch: Baccarin, who splits her time between New York City and Los Angeles, often travels with her dog, Rudy. "He is a Löwchen, which is a rare breed of dog from Germany," she says, confessing that her love affair with the dog began "after I had gone through a breakup a few years ago. I went to the Santa Monica pound and friend of mine convinced me to get him. I thought he was a mutt, but he's a purebred from Germany that was bred to be a lap dog for royalty. Every day I've been so thankful I got him. He's the sweetest little guy. He doesn't bark. He doesn't chew [on things]. Sometimes I want to get more.”

4. She's a wine lover: One of Baccarin's favorite vacations was a trip to Seville, Spain, with Chick. "The food! Aus and I are big wine lovers, and Spanish wines are amazing. We love eating out, and the tapas and wine there are to die for."

5. She's not really evil!: Baccarin may play a calculating alien with plans to eradicate the human race – but at home she loves to laugh and keep things light. When it's time to unwind, "I don't watch much TV, but I recently got addicted to Modern Family," she says. "It's one of my favorite shows."

Featured Artist Profile.....Julius Weiland

Release
fused glass tubes,
95 x 45 x 45 cm,

2009                         Julius Weiland website...CLICK HERE

Julius Weiland was born in Lübeck in 1971. From 1995 to 2000 he studied industrial design under Katsuhito Nishikawa and Ann Wolff at the Hamburg Art Academy, attended the Pilchuck Glass School at Stanwood, near Seattle, and completed periods of practical training in Swedish glass factories. He finished his studies in 2001 with a diploma from the Hamburg Academy and then set up as an independent artist in Berlin, establishing a studio in an abandoned factory.

Weiland sees himself as a sculptor. Mechanically manufactured glass tubing used for making laboratory appliances forms his raw material, which he cuts by hand and then fuses in fire-resistant molds of his own making. He controls the fusing process by reducing the heat in the furnace, or turning it off altogether, when the individual tubes are still just about upright or have partly collapsed. This is a similar kind of action to that carried out by glassblowers at the furnace. Yet the activity embodied in Weiland's objects and sculptures seems to continue after they have cooled and solidified, for light striking them gives them a life of their own, as though they were performing on a stage. Their component parts - the tubes - appear to twist and turn, pointing this way and that, collapsing together, emitting reflections or emerging from darkness as though picked out by a searchlight.

In the short time since Julius Weiland established his studio, he has received notable international recognition, including the Gold Medal at the 2004 International Exhibition of Glass in Kanazawa, Japan; the Jutta Cuny Franz Foundation award and honorable mention at the prestigious 2006 Coburger Glas Preis. Weiland's work is featured in many European public collections including Cisternerne Museum for Modern Glass Art in Copenhagen, Denmark; Glasmuseet Ebeltoft in Ebeltoft, Denmark; museum kunst palast, Glasmuseum Hentrich in Düsseldorf, Germany and Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg, Germany.

The process of Glass Tube Fusion

Julius' Technique is novel and the resultant objects are very appealing.
His signature work is the fusion of borosilicate glass tubes
In 1998 he obtained a large number of those at the closing of a factory that made laboratory equipments
The tubes are cut and layered in a mold (cement or a mixture of plaster and silica)
The Tubes in the mold are fired in a kiln at a certain temperature, then the firing process is stopped abruptly
The challenge is to keep the tubes distinct, without melting into each other

Initially Julius limited his creations to the vessel forms. In 2004 he won the
Gold Prize in the prestigious International Exhibition of Glass Kanazawa, Japan for his Vessel, Bath (above)
Recently he has added Sculptures to his Art creations.
Two of those sculptures (above) will be on exhibit at SOFA Chicago, October 2005

Julius' Objects come in three colors of Clear Glass: White (from Schott glass), Light Blue and Green
His earlier Work was of a limited numbered edition.  Now Julius is focusing on creating Unique Objects.
